Showing, one job listing at a time, how toxic a JD is on the job market. Please don't go to law school.

Criminal Justice Associate/Assistant Professor, and Assistant Professor (two openings)

[Ed.-- Today's post comes courtesy of The Legal Watchdog.  Thanks again!

It's actually fairly remarkable that a JD is not appropriate for a position teaching criminal justice.  Every law graduate took at least baby crim law, and some might have supplemented it with criminal procedure, working on a criminal law journal, etc.  None of that matters; a law degree qualifies you to be an attorney and nothing else.

While outside the scope of this blog, there's another remarkable fact about academia: I went to what is generally considered a "good school" (think somewhere between 5-20).  Virtually every professor had a PhD and a JD-- and the JD was from Harvard, Yale, Stanford, or the University of Chicago.  In other words, even my own law school was disinterested in hiring its graduates, and would much prefer a candidate who went somewhere else.  My class (including myself) did okay anyway, because there are only so many Harvard/Yale/Stanford/Chi grads to go around and take jobs, but that's quite a strong revealed preference, no?  Your own school doesn't think you're as good as elite students, why would anybody else?]
